We are looking at environmental aspects of the North Highland Way, starting with trees. We have teamed up with the Tree Council of Ireland with a view to promoting trees as the “Lungs of the Earth“. Trees are wonderfully diverse, and there are trees such as the sweet chestnut which grow prolifically in England, Ireland, Spain and Scotland but in Scotland, only as far north as Ross-shire. Caithness and Sutherland do not have many trees but there is a notable variety.
